Coming Soon – A Fire to Kindle by Daniel Dydek

A couple of years ago, I reviewed a fascinating fantasy series by Daniel Dydek. Now, he’s starting a new series, and I got to read one of his ARC copies (yes!). I have really enjoyed his books so far, and if you like Christian fantasy, you will too!

A Fire to Kindle is a Christian mystery and suspense YA book. Because of a couple of topics Daniel touches on, I wouldn’t give this book to anyone younger than high school age. I was engaged with the story from the start. Though a short story, the suspense snuck up on me, and suddenly I found myself reading the last few chapters in one sitting because I needed to know how the story ended. Towards the climax, there was a point of morbid curiosity where, even though the content was not something I typically read (and honestly, sort of creeps me out), the creepiness factor didn’t last too long and I was able to soon find out what happened. Daniel’s character dialogue is good, something I’d love to master and I love to read, and the supernatural yet quasi-fantasy gave this book a unique element.

As a Christian YA book with allegorical elements, A Fire to Kidle reminded me of the Knights of Arrethtrae books by Chuck Black. While I wasn’t always a fan of the more Reformed Protestant perspectives, and the slight antagonism towards traditionalism (though not necessarily tradition) I appreciated some of his critiques. While I perhaps wouldn’t have made some of the same criticisms, some of them were warranted. And that is the best part of such stories as these. They allow us to engage with ideas and faults in a safe and isolated setting that is seldom granted to us in reality.

Overall, I enjoyed  A Fire to Kindle. Its unique semi-historical/semi-fantasy setting was interesting to me, and its short yet driven narrative made this story engaging. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next in this series! And you needn’t wait long to get your own copy! Although release day isn’t until June 5th, you can preorder here and learn more about Daniel’s other books here.

Blessings to you and yours,

~Madelyn Craig
