We have all done it. We look in the mirror before we run out the door, and no sooner do we get in our car that we forget what we looked like. Maybe there was a smudge of makeup on our face, or a hair that was out of place. Perhaps we even forgot to run a brush though our hair! So it can be when we read God’s word. It is a mirror to our lives to reveal what our hearts look like. We may take a minute to glance though a chapter, but what benefit does it bring if we don’t apply it to our lives? Oftentimes, we read though it so fast that we forget what it ways and are unable to encourage ourselves or others when they need it most.
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourself. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at himself in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, ad continues in it – not forgetting what they have heard but doing it – they will be blessed in what they do. ~ James 1:22-25~
There are some days when I am so rushed to get out the door that I not only forget what I look like, but I forget what God’s word says. And I had only read it minutes before! IT is discouraging. On the days that I do remember, it serves as a guide to how I act that Day. On those other days, I stumble more because I missed or ignored the smudges in my life. My charge to myself and fellow Christians is to be diligent and attentive to reading scripture so that we may go into the world bolding and Christ-like. Not only will God bless us, but it will give us the chance to bless others.
