While We Are Sleeping

So today I am sitting here, playing my guitar, letting memories pass through my mind with each strum.  I am playing “While You Were Sleeping” by Casting Crowns, remembering the time I played this for my dying Aunt while she was in the hospital.  I can’t believe that was already two years ago… my, doesn’t time fly?

I am thinking of the words to the song when it says “while you were sleeping…”, it is basically telling us that all of these amazing things have happened, things that have been waited for so long, things that should be treasured, have all just happened and passed while we were sleeping.

In the song, Jesus becomes God made flesh, while the world lay sleeping. He teaches us, and then He dies for us, while their minds were sleeping. But then He will come again… and our hearts are frozen in sleep.

Okay, so maybe we are not physically sleeping. Maybe we are going to work, cleaning the house, going to a party, or doing homework.  Maybe it is the news, science, politics, wars… Anything that keeps us busy. Too busy for what Christ is trying to show or tell us.  Because something is keeping us from Him.

What is something that He is telling me now? Life is short.

Yes, very encouraging, I know.  But it is true.  Not that it is all depressing, but like everything here on earth, it is finite.  Life is valuable, yet we let it just fly by us with the business that fills it.

I brought my Aunt into the story because she died so young, just like her baby sister who died a few years before that.  She didn’t know it was going to happen so soon.  Yet, then again, neither do we.  What are we doing that is making our life full? Or are we simply letting life go by while we ‘sleep’ in the business of days.

Are we letting something keep us in sleep so we do not hear the Words of Christ?

What are we missing that God may be trying to show us? Or perhaps, have we become so busy that we don’t take the time to really learn from Him, or worse, believe in Him.

Our life is a vapor.  I see that with every death of a friend or family member, school shooting, soldier’s sacrifice, and day wasted.  Our life is here, and then it is gone.

Are we missing the importance and value of it every day? Do we take the time to watch our child’s game or recital? Do we try to do a kindly act of service for an elderly neighbor? Do we take the time to see the value and purpose in our own life? And then if we see it, do we show the purpose in other’s lives? What would happen if we lived like today was someone’s las, including our own?

I can’t say that I do everyday, but I try to see the purpose and value in others.  But I also know that time is short and the need to reach others is becoming greater. Think about it, are you a servant of Christ?

With hearing all this talk about the world ending today, I also see people preparing for its destruction.  But not many are preparing for what will happen to their souls.  I mean, this body is as good as dead. When we die, our soul will go someplace else.  But I know that the only place I want to be is with my Saviour Jesus Christ. And by His grace, I know that is where I will go.

But if the world would have ended today, or even tomorrow for that matter, would you have been ready? If Jesus were to come this instant, are you ready? Are we prepared?

Or will this world and what God has promised you go by ‘While You Are Sleeping’?

But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
~ Romans 10:8-9 ~

He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
