Review: My Side of the Mountain

This nostalgic book was recommended to me by a friend, and I am so glad we read it. I read it aloud to my children, and while I think boys will enjoy it most, my six-year-old imaginative daughter really did enjoy it. This is a book of adventure and wonder. The idea is: what if a young boy did what so many long to do—run away to a “legendary” family farm and live off the land in the wilderness? While the writing is perhaps much safer than reality, that is part of what makes it a perfect story. He is not angry with his family; he does not run away because he does not love them. Indeed, the scenes of reuniting with his dad are incredibly touching. No, he simply wishes to follow that drive of independence and adventure that I think lives in the heart of every boy, assuming we don’t kill it first. That is what this book has to offer, making this a great read.

Blessings to you and yours,
