Happy Reformation Day!

I hope you all are celebrating in some way today. Perhaps you and your kids are dressing up to hang out with friends, or preparing for All Saints Day, or sharing some funny memes to lighten the weight of history. Maybe doing a little of everything! Something I wanted to do this year was translate a hymn. I’ve never done something like this before, and honestly, there are people out there who can do it better than I did (and can probably correct me on my grammar)! But I’ve wanted to have a Latin version of A Mighty Fortress for a couple of years now, and as I couldn’t find one in that time, I might be the only one. I wonder what Luther would think of my task? I’m not sure, but I am sure that Latin is a beautiful language, and this was definitely a fun assignment. Some people do crosswords, I work with languages! Anyway, I hope you enjoy what I’ve put together, and may this Reformation day be filled with blessings for you and yours!

Ingenium refugium est Deus noster
Bona defensio et arma.
Nos ab omni malo liberat
Illo nos nunc opprimit.
Antiquus hostis malus
Nobis nocere vult;
Potestatem et dolum
Sunt arma eius.
In terrae non est aequalis.

Cum viribus nostris, nihil facere possemus
Conatus nostri deficiet nos.
Pro nobis pugnat vir fortissimus
Quem Deus ipse elegit.
Quaeris quis sit?
Christus Jesus ipse est!
Dominus Sabaoth
Et non est alius deus.
In aeternum praevalebit.

Et si mundus daemonibus abundat
Et contendent nos devorare
Non timemus nos prosperabitur
Veritas Dei in nobis triumphabit.
Crudelum rectorem huius mundi,
Non trepidamus propter eum!
Nocere nobis non potest
Iudicatus est.
Unum verbum eum percutiet.

Verbum Dei super potestates
Manet non obstante eas.
Deus semper est cum eo
In eius spiritus et donos.
Etiam capiant nostram vitam,
Propietem, honorem, et familiam!
Omnia dimitte;
Veritas Dei duret.
Regnum in aeternum manet!
