My family never did much for the time of Advent. In all honesty, I wasn’t really sure what it was until I met my much more Lutheran husband! But over the years, we’ve both tried to include more traditional and liturgical elements in our daily life. This year, I decided I wanted to create a series of ornaments for different days of Advent. In addition to those I made for the Sundays, I also created a couple for saints days and for the O Antiphons, which most of us know best from the hymn. O Come, Emmanuel was one of the first hymns my daughter learned when we started doing family devotions, and it has been wonderful to find a new way to celebrate this season and this song with my children. Below is a translation of the traditional O Antiphon prayer for this day along with a couple of scripture passages that I found fitting for the day. And if you feel so inclined to sing, I also included the stanza from the hymn for this day as well.
Blessings to you and yours during this season of Advent,
~Madelyn Rose Craig
O Wisdom, proceeding from the mouth of the
Most High, pervading and permeating all creation, mightily
ordering all things: come and teach us the way of prudence.
Teach me your way, Lord,
that I may rely on your faithfulness;
give me an undivided heart,
that I may fear your name.Psalm 86:11
“The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works,
before his deeds of old;
I was formed long ages ago,
at the very beginning, when the world came to be.
When there were no watery depths, I was given birth,
when there were no springs overflowing with water;
before the mountains were settled in place,
before the hills, I was given birth,
before he made the world or its fields
or any of the dust of the earth.
I was there when he set the heavens in place,
when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,
when he established the clouds above
and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,
when he gave the sea its boundary
so the waters would not overstep his command,
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.
Then I was constantly at his side.
I was filled with delight day after day,
rejoicing always in his presence,
rejoicing in his whole world
and delighting in mankind.Proverbs 8:22-31
O come, O Wisdom from on high,
who ordered all things mightily;
to us the path of knowledge show
and teach us in its ways to go.Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to you, O Israel.
