Poetry: Dickenson – There is no Frigate like a Book

There is no Frigate like a Book
To take us Lands away
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry –
This Traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of Toll –
How frugal is the Chariot
That bears the Human Soul –

Simple, elegant, and contained within itself. This poem lends itself to be what it instructs: a frugal chariot to bear the human soul. Yes, no ship can move a person in the way a book does. Time, space, emotion — all are suspended and transported once we find ourselves between the pages of a book. All within our hands and hearts! And how beautiful is a poem to our eyes, and how swiftly it takes us on its wings to new ways of seeing and feeling. These gleaming transports are for anyone and anywhere. And as this poem instructs, it is a little but magnificent thing that uplifts and carries our souls to new lands, new thoughts, new joys. So read widely, read often, and be uplifted by so small a fare.

Blessings to you and yours,
